Reaves Gallery presents Variations/Phenomena, an exhibition of paintings by artist Christo Braun. Braun’s work will be on view at Reaves Gallery from February 4 through March 1, 2009. An opening reception will be held on Friday, February 20, from 6 - 9pm.
Braun’s primary influence comes from nature and the captured moment of energy-infused visual phenomena. Rather than paint the object as it is seen, Braun translates his emotional response using layers of translucent glaze and pigmented-resin on reflective stainless steel. The plasticity of resin as a painting medium allows maximum color saturation, and provides the ability to overlay imagery which can then be carved, sculpted, polished, and manipulated. His underlying question, “why is this so beautiful, and how can I paint it?”
Christo Braun earned his MA from David’s University College, Wales, U.K. in 1985 and B.A. SUNY Albany, N.Y. 1982. A long time San Francisco resident, Braun was born in New York and currently lives and works in Pittsburgh, PA.
