Reaves Gallery presents “a piece of my mind’, an exhibition of new works by San Francisco artist Lucky Rapp. Lucky’s work will be on view at Reaves Gallery from April 1 through 26, 2009. An opening reception will be held on Friday, April 17, from 6 - 9pm.
Lucky combines research from textbooks, images, and charts from the 1900’s to recreate a version of the brain. Her definitions draw from a vision while living in a jungle in Southeast Asia and play with the balance of reality. The featured work ‘a piece of my mind’ includes 9 puzzling pieces, 7' x 7', that define and illustrate the brain in a whimsical, playful, cognac fashion. 'my grain', an hour glass reflection of how the brain develops over time. 'mind, all mine', plate 101 - labeling the brain and its properties. These pieces layered with clear resin and floating text are one part truth, one part play – a science.
Lucky Rapp is a self taught artist although her mother was pregnant with her while getting her degree in art and interior design, which could reflect the principle permeable possibilities of osmosis. Lucky graduated from SDSU with a degree in sports medicine and athletic training. Born in the Bay Area, Lucky has traveled extensively throughout Europe, India and Asia and has lived in Germany and Paris. She returned to the Bay Area in 2001, where she lives and creates in San Francisco’s Mission District.
