Make Room

Spattered Columns, an exhibition space operated by the non-profit organization Art Connects New York, is pleased to announce the opening of “Make Room” on Wednesday, September 15th 2010. “Make Room”, curated by Sharon R. Reaves of Reaves Gallery (www.reavesgallery.com), is a cutting-edge exhibition featuring site-specific work and a floor-to-ceiling collaborative installation by four emerging artists in the New York City area. Through dialogue and a unique exchange of ideas, the artists question the idea of claiming their own space in a gallery context.

Artist Katie Commodore (www.kcommodore.com) will re-create a Victorian-style salon setting. Traditional wallpaper will serve as the backdrop for works in various mediums including pencil, ink, and gouache.

Former graffiti artist Sean Lugo, aka NINE (www.savagehabbit.com), will also create a highly-frenetic living room setting. This contemporary living room will be a figurative yet surreal interior filled with unexpected imagery such as birds, Batman and hot air balloons, created through a blend of collage, stenciling, and wall painting. Natalie Lanese’s (www.natalielanese.com) work will serve as a direct contrast to Lugo’s installation. Lanese will collage an expansive outdoor landscape crammed with people, structures, and activity in a cityscape of abstract geometric chevrons. Artist Beth Ann Morrison (www.bethmorrison.com) will create a sheltering structure with chicken wire and newsprint, allowing paint and materials from the adjoining installation to invade her space.

The opening reception for “Make Room” will take place from 6pm-8pm on Wednesday, September 15th, 2010 at Spattered Columns, 491 Broadway, 5th Floor, New York, New York 10013. The show will run until October 16th.
