Reaves Gallery is pleased to present Wonder Lee.
The series of work reflects Wonder Lee's unique ability to turn ordinary items into extraordinary pieces of art with poetic insight. She will also be performing poetry from her book "Maxed Out" which tells the story of one woman's date and time stamped poetic journey of the heart and mind that finally reaches its limit after seven months of daily inspired writing. This is a story of heartbreak, self reflection, and introspection. Using her inner voice as a tool for digging deep into the subconscious she finds lessons of love, friendship, misunderstanding, and eventually acceptance. “Maxed Out” chronicles the conflict of intuition brought upon by an untouchable female muse. See the lessons she learned as they unfolded to her over time. Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.

Wonder Lee is a self-taught assemblage artist and poet based in New York City's borough of The Bronx. She writes poetry based on her daily experiences and relationships. In July of 2010 she began a haiku of the day as a way to encourage others to have a positive outlook on life. Her artistic philosophy focuses on using unwanted objects that would otherwise be considered trash. Inspired by these objects, she transforms them into works that echo a social conscience. This social conscience not only resonates through her work, but also through her life. She honed her carpentry skills from the Nontraditional Employment for Women program and learned to become a teaching artist from Voices Unbroken. Believing that sharing is caring, Wonder Lee teaches a mixed media art workshop to children at The Children's Aid Society's Next Generation Center in the Bronx and facilitates poetry workshops with teenage inmates at Rikers Island for Voices Unbroken. Ever evolving, Wonder Lee has forged partnerships and collaborates frequently with her contemporaries. She has participated in several group shows in New York City including The Go Green Expo. She has also performed her poetry at various venues throughout New York City including the Nuyorican Poets Cafe. Wonder Lee loves making something out of nothing. She hopes her artwork will inspire people to learn to use what they have and be less wasteful.
